Its main cause is compression of the glossopharyngeal nerve by vascular structures, although it may also be related to tumors, infections or trauma. <\/span><\/p><h5><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong> <\/strong><strong>How is it diagnosed?<\/strong><\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Diagnosis is based on clinical history and neurological examination, which is usually normal. It is advisable to perform a cranial MRI to evaluate if there is a vascular growth and to rule out secondary causes, such as tumors or vascular malformations that may be compressing the nerve. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Since it is a rare pathology, it can be confused with other causes of oropharyngeal or facial pain, such as trigeminal neuralgia, referred otalgia or temporomandibular joint disorders.<\/span><\/p><h5><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>How is glossopharyngeal neuralgia treated?<\/strong><\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Treatment is usually initiated with neuromodulatory drugs such as carbamazepine or gabapentin, which help to reduce nerve excitability. In more severe or drug-resistant cases, surgical procedures such as microvascular decompression may be considered. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Although it is a rare condition, there are therapeutic options that can significantly improve the quality of life of those who suffer from it.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
