Lucila Rodríguez)

Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative pathology characterized by progressive neuronal loss and the accumulation of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in brain tissue, now has a brighter future thanks to the appearance of Lecanemab, a monoclonal antibody that slows cognitive deterioration in the early stages of the disease by 27%.

In addition, according to Dr. Víctor Blanco Palmero, associate neurologist at the Memory Unit of the Neurology Service of the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, the analysis of plasma and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers carried out in the phase 3 ‘Clarity AD’ trial also improved with the treatment.

These results are so important that last year the drug was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is currently under evaluation by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Once it is approved in Europe, the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) is also expected to approve it, which means that many Alzheimer’s patients could soon see the course of this disease, which in Spain alone affects some 800,000 people and represents between 60% and 70% of all cases of dementia diagnosed.

The treatment is administered intravenously every two weeks and can produce some side effects such as, for example, alterations in vision, headache or, in the most severe cases, cerebral hemorrhages and neuroinflammatory phenomena, so it is necessary to perform periodic MRI scans during its administration to avoid these problems. However, the results obtained in the trial support its safety.

“It has been shown to slow down worsening on several cognitive and functional scales, but it is true that it is currently debated whether or not the observed results represent clinically significant utility. Long-term data will be needed to confirm this,” emphasizes Dr. Blanco Palmero.

Lecanemab: the drug that opens the door to hope for Alzheimer’s patients (Madrid.
