The Neurology Service of the Ruber Internacional Hospital is a reference in the approach and treatment of neurological diseases thanks to a team of 66 professionals, led by Dr. Oriol Franch, who every day, 365 days a year, attend patients and their families in a humanized way.<\/h6>\n

In the year 2022 alone, more than 3,500 new patients passed through the service’s consultation rooms and more than 6,800 check-ups were performed, in addition to tests and other medical procedures. In fact, this healthcare work has recently been recognized by ‘Newsweek’ magazine , which has included them in its list of ‘World’s Best Specialized Centers’.<\/a> <\/p>\n

“In the team there are 66 intelligent, hard-working, honest and very well-trained professionals from high-level international and national centers,” says Dr. Franch, who created the service in 1992 with the aim of developing a “high-level” neurology in the “best possible conditions”.<\/p>\n

In fact, in order to achieve this goal, the neurologist began by promoting neurology at a general level and then gradually incorporated neurophysiology, the study and treatment of epilepsy and movement disorders. Currently, the service already has 14 specialized units that treat pathologies such as headaches, involuntary movements, cognitive disorders, neuromuscular diseases or aspects related to sleep medicine, among many others. <\/p>\n

One of the most outstanding units is the Epilepsy Unit<\/a>, created in 1998 and led by Dr. Antonio Gil-Nagel, which is one of the most active in surgery for this disease in Spain. In addition, the Functional Movement Disorders Unit stands out for being a pioneer in the comprehensive approach to patients with these problems. <\/p>\n

“The service has gone from being on my own to forming a team that ensures the development of a general neurology in good conditions, with a high level and with appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. We have been growing according to objectives because our aim has been to have the necessary neurological subspecialties to be able to respond adequately to patient demand,” explains Dr. Franch.<\/p>\n

Thanks to all this, the Neurology Service provides multidisciplinary care and a differential treatment to patients, guaranteeing at all times an adequate care time. “One of the variables of good or bad medicine is time, and we guarantee to attend to patients and their families for as long as they need it and, therefore, we are always available to them, including holidays, because diseases have no days or hours,” the doctor points out. <\/p>\n

Another of the features that characterize the Service is that it has state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques and all the therapeutic possibilities that currently exist to deal with any neurological disease. “We do not need to refer any patient, we solve all kinds of neurological problems,” says Dr. Franch. <\/p>\n

The service also specializes in second opinions, that is, in the medical study of a patient who has previously been evaluated by the same reason for consultation or by several physicians. The objective in these cases is to analyze an undiagnosed problem, confirm a diagnosis and\/or recommended treatment and evaluate other diagnostic and\/or therapeutic possibilities. <\/p>\n

“In my personal practice, half of the patients are second opinions and this takes a process that involves a detailed collection of the entire clinical history, an exhaustive general and neurological examination, the review of all the studies that have been done previously and, from there, the planning of the studies that need to be done to reach a diagnosis,” argues the doctor.<\/p>\n

Finally, and as future challenges, the Neurology Department plans to “improve” what is already being done and, at the same time, to strengthen and expand everything related to the approach to child neurology.<\/p>\n
