{"id":17111,"date":"2019-11-29T10:50:17","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T09:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/physical-exercise-and-cognitive-function\/"},"modified":"2025-04-21T13:30:48","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T11:30:48","slug":"physical-exercise-and-cognitive-function","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/en\/physical-exercise-and-cognitive-function\/","title":{"rendered":"Physical exercise and cognitive function"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">  For some time now, a <strong>large number of papers<\/strong> have been published weekly (follow-up with bibliographic alerts in PubMed) that aim, firstly, to find a <strong>direct relationship between physical exercise and cognitive function<\/strong> and, secondly, to offer <strong>specific recommendations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At present, all studies carried out with <strong>therapies<\/strong> offered to people with <strong>cognitive impairment<\/strong>, and more specifically with <strong>Alzheimer&#8217;s disease (AD)<\/strong>, are based on these premises:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>There is no cure; drugs can improve cognitive functioning, but they do not modify the disease.<\/li><li>There is no preventive medication.<\/li><li>The objective is to delay or slow down the onset.<\/li><li>NON-PHARMACOLOGICAL THERAPIES should be implemented to improve cognitive functioning prior to the onset of AD.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ejercicio-fisico-a-barrio-oct-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2358\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\nThe effect of physical\nexercise (PE) as a non-pharmacological strategy for the prevention of both age-related cognitive impairment\nand on groups of people with subjective cognitive impairment (SCID) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is already well known.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ejercicio-fisico2-a-barrio-oct-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2359\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is believed that the EF may have effects\non a wide variety of neuroprotective factors.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ejercicio-fisico3-a-barrio-oct-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2360\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ejercicio-fisico4-a-barrio-oct-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2361\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changes have also been documented\nby magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in people who perform EF versus those who\ndo not. The main conclusion is that the tissue density\nthat is lost with age is reduced. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ejercicio-fisico5-a-barrio-oct-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2362\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But what type of EF is the most recommended\n?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ejercicio-fisico6-a-barrio-oct-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2363\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the specific type of exercise there are a number of variables to consider:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>STRETCHING<ul><li>AEROBIC<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">  The duration of the intervention over time.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>  Intensity<\/li><li>  Weekly frequency<\/li><li>  The time of each session<\/li><li>  Type of exercise<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>STRETCHING<\/li><li>AEROBIC<\/li><li>RESISTANCE<\/li><li>BALANCE<\/li><li>TAI-CHI<\/li><\/ol>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The duration of the intervention over time.<\/li><li>Intensity<\/li><li>Weekly frequency<\/li><li>The time of each session<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The latest studies conclude that <strong>aerobic exercise<\/strong> (walking, swimming, cycling&#8230;) has a moderate, clinically significant effect on cognitive function:  <\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When\nthe aerobic exercise is of moderate intensity.<ul><li>3\nsessions per week<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ejercicio-fisico7-a-barrio-oct-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2364\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interest in the possible effect of EF\non HR is not recent; as early as 1998 a WHO expert group published\na paper in which such positive effects were reported, not only on HR,\nbut also on mental health and health care costs.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Decrease\nin health care expenses.<\/li><li>Campaigns\nthat promote physical activity as a way to better health and its\nimpact on:<\/li><li>Descent\ndepression and anxiety.<\/li><li>Best\nstress tolerance.<\/li><li>Improvement\nof self-esteem.<\/li><li>Mobility.<\/li><li>Enfer.\nCardiovascular.<\/li><li>Osteoporosis.<\/li><li>Falls.<\/li><li>Diabetes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A passive lifestyle is an\nimportant risk factor for poor health and reduced functional capacity\n.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, and as a graphic summary, these\nare the 10 recommendations to keep the <strong>brain healthy<\/strong> according to the\nSpanish Society of Neurology and the Brain Foundation.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ejercicio-fisico8-cerebro-saludable-a-barrio-oct-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2365\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Author:  <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/quienes-somos\/equipo-de-colaboradores\/antonio-del-barrio-alba\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Antonio del Barrio<\/a>, neuropsychologist attached to the Neurology Service of the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, since 1999.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/neurologiaclinica.es\/en\/contact\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">If you are interested in receiving information about our specialists or programs, please contact us<\/a>.
