However, while there is clear scientific evidence that physical therapy reduces disability and improves quality of life in this disease, few studies have evaluated the usefulness of occupational therapy.

The main objective of the occupational therapist is to improve the autonomy of people in various tasks, ranging from the most basic ones such as self-care activities (dressing, grooming) to more complex ones such as the performance of a work activity or leisure activities.

Study on the effects of occupational therapy in Parkinson’s disease:

In April of this year, the first randomized, controlled study, with a large number of patients, analyzing the results of occupational therapy in Parkinson’s disease was published1.

A total of 191 patients with Parkinson’s disease were recruited in 10 hospitals in the Netherlands. All of them, because of the disease, had difficulty in performing various tasks of daily living (self-care, leisure or work). The mean age was 70 years, with a mean disease evolution of 6 years. Of the 191 patients, 67 received the usual treatment (drugs +/- physiotherapy) and in 124 patients this treatment was complemented with occupational therapy for 10 weeks (16 sessions). All were evaluated at the beginning of the treatment and at 3 and 6 months after its completion.

The results were as follows:

Fifty-one percent of those treated with occupational therapy improved their independence compared to 17% of those who received the usual treatment.

This improvement occurred both in patients with recent onset Parkinson’s disease and in those with more years of evolution.

After the end of occupational therapy, the functional improvement achieved at the beginning decreased over time.

This study demonstrates that occupational therapy can improve quality of life and independence in people with Parkinson’s disease. This benefit diminishes over time, suggesting that maintenance therapy is desirable. On the other hand, although the patients who generally attend rehabilitation are those with more advanced disease, the early stages of the disease also benefit from occupational therapy.

1.IHWM Sturkenboom et al.
