World Stroke Day

A stroke causes the loss of neurons as a result of 3.5 years of aging.

World Stroke Day
This Sunday, October 29, is World Stroke Day, a neurological disease of which more than 120,000 cases are diagnosed each year in Spain and which, according to the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), causes a loss of neurons similar to that produced every 3.5 years of life. Moreover, it is already considered the second leading cause of death, a problem that becomes even more serious if we take into account that the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in 2050, 46% of the population will be over 65 years of age, the age at which most strokes tend to occur.

In fact, age is one of the main risk factors, as is having suffered a previous stroke; having obesity, diabetes and/or metabolic syndrome; consuming alcohol, tobacco or drugs; being sedentary; having high levels of stress; or using oral contraceptives or hormone therapy.

One of the main challenges presented by stroke is to treat it in time, since it has been shown that every minute that passes reduces the chances of recovery and the sequelae can have a disabling effect in the future, for example, alterations in speech or cognitive impairment.

Therefore, it is very important for society to know what to do in the event of a possible case of stroke:

  • Ask the affected person to raise his or her arms to check for loss of strength.
Smile to check whether or not he or she has paralysis on one side of the face.
  • Ask him/her to repeat a commonly used sentence to check for speech impairment.

In the case of a suspected stroke, it is necessary to go to the emergency room so that the patient’s condition can be assessed as soon as possible, as well as not to feed, drink or take any medication.

Once in the emergency services, the patient will be treated appropriately, and if it is confirmed that it is a stroke, the corresponding protocol will be applied to avoid possible permanent sequelae or greater harm.

These patients should be followed up in consultation to avoid recurrence.

The Neurology Service of the Ruber Internacional Hospital has neurologists available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
