Neuro-rehabilitation Unit
What is neuro-rehabilitation?
Neuro-rehabilitation is the medical procedure that deals with the recovery of the nervous system after an injury (vascular, traumatic, infectious, metabolic or other). It aims to minimize and compensate functional alterations, and to achieve the highest level of autonomy. Neuro-rehabilitation is based on scientific evidence of treatment efficacy.
Who are we?
A multidisciplinary team (neurologist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and neuropsychologist), specialized in the rehabilitation of neurological disorders, we work to offer a personalized and quality treatment.
What are we dealing with?
- Acquired brain damage (stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, anoxic encephalopathy).
- Neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s disease, ALS)
- Ataxias
- Mild cognitive impairment and dementias
- Multiple sclerosis
- Neuromuscular disorders (myopathies, peripheral neuropathies)
- Spine pathology (pre/post surgery)
- Headaches
- Gait disorders
- Functional movement disorders
What do we offer?
- An individualized, comprehensive treatment coordinated by the neuro-rehabilitation team, which aims to improve the functional capacity and autonomy of the person.
- The treatment program is re-evaluated periodically to determine the patient’s progress and adapt the objectives.
- Two treatment modalities are available to meet the needs of each individual:
- Hospitalized: the patient receives rehabilitation treatment in a hospital that has all the medical-surgical services (neurosurgery, neuro-radiology, traumatology) necessary for the care of acquired brain injury.
- Ambulant: with treatment in the hospital and/or at home.
Specialized
We have special experience in the rehabilitation of acute neurological diseases (cerebral infarcts and hemorrhages, cranioencephalic trauma and others) from the first days of their presentation. Early initiation of rehabilitation is important to ensure the best prognosis. The coordinated availability of all the human and technical resources (neurological, neurosurgical, neurophysiology, neuroimaging, intensive care) that a patient may require in these circumstances, together with an experienced neuro-rehabilitation unit, allows us to offer the best care for patients with acute or subacute brain damage. In these circumstances, it is frequent that the patient may require the participation of other specialists (neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-radiologists, intensivists) or facilities (ICU, operating rooms) or techniques (neurophysiology, neuroimaging), which may be determinant for the evolution of the patient’s disease.
Neurology
The entire rehabilitation process is carried out under medical supervision. The neurologist coordinates the neuro-rehabilitation team and performs clinical monitoring of the patient’s evolution. Additionally we have techniques such as botulinum toxin guided by EMG, for the treatment of spasticity.

Physiotherapy
The work of our physiotherapists is aimed at improving motor function through balance, coordination and gait training.
Facilities
The Neuro-rehabilitation Unit is located in the Neurology Service, on the second floor of the Ruber Internacional Hospital. It has a gymnasium, individualized treatment cabin, speech therapy, occupational therapy, neuropsychology and medical office.
We organize the therapies in a coordinated way, with our specialists, to facilitate the patients’ treatment.

Our specialists will review your case, propose a treatment plan and a budget. Depending on your needs, therapies can be performed:
- Inpatient: in our Hospital
- On an outpatient basis: in the Neuro-rehabilitation Unit where we have a gymnasium and rooms (neuropsychology, speech therapy, occupational therapy).
- At home: our specialists can come to the patient’s home, thus avoiding the need for the patient to travel to the hospital.
