Epilepsy Unit

The Epilepsy Unit was opened in 1998. Since then, he has applied the philosophy of deepening the diagnosis of the causes of epilepsy and establishing the most appropriate treatment for each patient.

Following this methodology, he has pioneered the diagnosis of epilepsy using video-EEG monitoring, high-definition imaging techniques, and genetic and metabolic studies.

In Spain, it is one of the most active centers in epilepsy surgery, an area in which it has excelled in the development of novel techniques, such as stereo-electroencephalography (deep electrodes), surgery in patients with normal MRI, and gamma-knife radiosurgery.

These techniques have made it possible to successfully apply surgical treatment in adults and children who had previously been considered unsuitable for surgery. For this reason, it has become a reference center, to which patients are referred from all over Spain, as well as from other countries, mainly Latin America and North Africa.

The Epilepsy Program is actively involved in research projects, focusing especially on the diagnosis and treatment of difficult-to-control epilepsy (refractory epilepsy). Some of these projects have already provided relevant information on the interpretation of symptoms and electroencephalogram during seizures, the use of magnetoencephalography (MEG), and genetic and metabolic studies in epilepsy.

In other cases, research has led to the development of new drugs or modifications in surgical approaches. Research is usually carried out in collaboration with other international and Spanish centers, which allows us to gain early access to new knowledge and transfer it to our patients.
