Home exercise for Parkinson’s disease patients

In the exceptional situation we are living, due to the Covid19 pandemic and having to be at home 24 hours a day, we wanted to write a post about home exercise for patients with Parkinson’s disease and other Parkinsonisms.

In all circumstances, a regular exercise program tailored to the needs of patients with movement disorders should be a key component of the treatment of people with movement disorders.

The most relevant motor features of Parkinson’s disease include:

  • Slowness of movement (bradykinesia)
  • Muscle and joint stiffness (loss of elasticity)
  • Alteration of postural reflexes (loss of balance).
  • Tremor (although not in all patients this will be the main symptom).
  • Stooped posture
  • Changes in gait pattern (short strides, decreased foot elevation, difficulty turning, and others)

Therefore, the exercises will be aimed at preventing and fighting against the functional incapacities that may be generated and maintaining the best possible physical condition.

In this first post we are going to develop a sequence of movements and stretches.

Regular stretching is necessary and key in an exercise program for people with Parkinson’s disease as it serves to counteract the effects of muscle stiffness and extend joint range of motion.

Benefits of stretching:

  • Improve range of motion of the joints
  • Help maintain or improve posture
  • Relax muscle tension
  • They keep muscle tissue in good condition, reducing the risk of injury.

A video is shown with a series of stretches and movements to serve as a guide, as it is for more dependent patients or with little stability it is preferable to perform the exercises sitting in a chair:

We hope you found it useful and practical .
