SEN Communication: Physical Rehabilitation Functional Movement Disorders

Our Neuro-rehabilitation Unit has a pioneering program in Spain in the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of patients with functional movement disorders (FMD).

During the LXXI Annual Meeting of the SEN (Spanish Society of Neurology) held from November 19 to 23, in Seville, a communication has been presented that reflects the work of this program developed since January 2017.

Functional Movement Disorders

Functional Movement Disorders (FMD) are a common cause of neurological consultation. They affect the quality of life of patients, even producing high levels of disability. We present the experience of the specific rehabilitation program for TMFs that we perform in our center. We have conducted a prospective descriptive study of all patients treated in physiotherapy from 01/2017 to 03/2019; previously diagnosed and considered candidates for rehabilitation by a specialist neurologist. The results obtained are in agreement with those recently published in the scientific literature and coincide with the growing evidence suggesting that specialized physical rehabilitation is a key piece in the approach to TMF. Further controlled studies assessing long-term outcomes are required.
