Image post-processing

For many patients, with refractory epilepsies (unresponsive to medication) and with apparently normal MRI scans, the possibilities were very limited until now. Epilepsy surgeries, an option that makes it possible to solve these uncontrolled epilepsies, are not feasible for patients in whom no imaging abnormalities could be detected until now.

Our Epilepsy Unit team has just implemented new software, and is now working on image post-processing. This means a light for many patients who until now were not candidates for surgery. Thanks to this software, and the experience of our specialists, apparently normal MRIs can be studied in more depth. Our Epilepsy Unit, which is staffed by three neurologists under the supervision of Dr. Gil-Nagel, evaluates these images for subtle lesions. To be able to offer these patients a possibility with the post-processing of these images is a great challenge and a door to hope, and we are working along these lines.

Sometimes having to tell a patient that there is no possibility of an effective treatment, or option for surgery, is very hard. Patients come to our offices in search of diagnosis and treatment. Patients suffering from epilepsies that are controlled by drugs, refractory epilepsies, often suffer from this disease in a disabling way. For these patients the option of surgery is a solution, but what happens when no lesion is recorded on imaging? Until now we could not offer the option of surgery to control these patients, but now all these cases can be studied again, looking for small lesions, thus opening up a range of surgical possibilities.
