Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly palpable reality in our lives, and is already present in many areas such as telecommunications, cinema, culture and even healthcare. More and more studies are showing the benefits it can bring to daily clinical practice, as long as the tools are used by professionals who are well trained to understand the data they provide.
Parkinson’s disease is precisely one of the diseases in which the use of Artificial Intelligence can bring significant advantages to both patients and the healthcare professionals who treat them. This is being analyzed in ‘AI-PROGNOSIS’, a research and innovation project of the Horizon Europe program that aims to advance the diagnosis and care of the disease through new predictive models combined with digital biomarkers of everyday devices.
The four-year initiative, which involves 18 partners from the European Union and the United Kingdom, will carry out three multicenter clinical studies in different healthcare centers, including the Clinical Neurology Unit of the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid.

Smartphone and smart wristwatches Specifically, the aim of ‘AI-PROGNOSIS’ is to create an ecosystem of three AI-based digital health tools
to improve the detection and care of Parkinson’s disease. All of them, and with the help of a smartphone and a smart wristwatch, will provide personalized information on the risk, progression and treatment of the disease.
The first project will use the ‘mAI-Health’ application to enable people suspected of having Parkinson’s to carry out personalized monitoring of their risk; the second will use ‘mAI-Care’, designed to enable patients to monitor their symptoms, the
progression of the disease and the efficacy of the drugs; and the third and final study will make use of ‘mAI-Insights’, a web application aimed at healthcare professionals for the detection of Parkinson’s disease, the monitoring of patients and the optimization of the
medication regimen.
These tools will undoubtedly mark a turning point in the approach to Parkinson’s disease, the most common neurodegenerative movement disorder, which affects approximately 10 million people worldwide, and whose incidence is expected to double by 2040.
