Migraine Update
This week, during the General Session that is organized at the Ruber International Hospital every Wednesday, the Dr. Oriol Franch and Dr. Elena Riva, of the Neurology Department presented an Up To Date on Migraine (Migraine Update). Sharing with colleagues from the Hospital, and specialists from other areas, the latest news about this pathology.
About 14% of people, and in the case of women up to 19%, suffer from migraine headaches. Migraine is considered a primary headache, which means that it is produced by a structural or systemic cause, and is usually characterized by episodes of headache, of moderate to severe intensity, and whose duration can vary from a few hours to days. These circumstances can negatively affect the patient’s quality of life in the work, family and/or social environments.
In Spain it is the leading cause of disability before the age of 50. Given these data, it is surprising how little importance is given to it, causing many people to self-medicate and this pathology to become chronic.
Diagnosis is clinical, and in order to establish a treatment, health education, preventive treatment and the use of drugs to control these attacks are essential. Preventive treatments are very varied,
oral, injectables such as botulinum toxin and, in recent years, anti-CGRP monoclonal antibodies.
