Bell’s palsy consists of an inflammation of the facial nerve of unknown cause, although many cases are suspected to have a viral origin (e.g. herpes simplex).

It usually begins with pain in the back of the ear. In the following hours, weakness in the facial musculature appears.

In most cases the evolution is favorable, but recovery may be slow over the course of weeks or months.
