Campimetric defect

Alterations of the visual fields or campimetric defect may be due to lesions of the retina, optic nerves, chiasm, optic ribbons, lateral geniculate ganglia, optic radiations or cerebral visual cortex.

The visual field is a decisive examination in the diagnosis and follow-up of neuro-ophthalmologic patients.

The campimetric defect pattern orients and, in many occasions, allows to identify the location of a lesion at brain level.

The methods of campimetric scanning are diverse.

– Confrontation campimetry is a simple method that can be used in a doctor’s office or at the patient’s bedside without any instrumentation.

– The instrumental methods most commonly used in daily practice are kinetic, with the tangent screen or the Goldmann campimeter, and static, with computerized instruments.
