Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory disease characterized by a combination of skin and muscle lesions.

Skin lesions consist of reddening of the skin of the face, chest and dorsum of the fingers.

Muscle injuries produce progressive weakness in the extremities with predominant involvement of the shoulders and hips.

Dermatomyositis may occur in isolation or in association with rheumatologic or tumor problems.
