Diplopia

Diplopia is the double vision of an object, i.e. the perception of two images of the same object, which can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

Double vision that disappears when closing either eye is secondary to an ocular motility defect due to an alteration of the muscles, of the neuro-muscular junction or of the nerves that innervate these muscles or of the circulation that irrigates the oculomotor nerves.

A neuro-ophthalmologic examination should be able to locate the lesion responsible for the double vision. In addition, the cause of the lesion should be demonstrated through appropriate complementary studies.

There are many diseases that can cause double vision.

The appearance of double vision requires urgent medical evaluation.

Double vision that persists when closing one eye or the other is usually due to an eye disorder.
