Duchenne dystrophy is a muscle disease caused by a sex-linked genetic mutation. This means that it is maternally transmitted and affects sons. Female carriers have mild symptoms or remain asymptomatic.

Symptoms usually begin in childhood and consist of progressive weakness in the extremities.

Current treatment focuses on rehabilitation and symptomatic measures. Some patients may stabilize or transiently improve with steroids.
