Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Guillain-Barré syndrome is characterized by diffuse involvement of the peripheral nervous system with acute onset and inflammatory mechanism.

The most characteristic symptom consists of a generalized and ascending weakness (it starts in the legs and may reach the arms and face).

Some patients have sensory and autonomic symptoms (e.g., blood pressure oscillations, difficulty controlling urination).

Early treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins or plasmapheresis may improve outcome.
