Hemianopsia
Hemianopsia is the loss of vision in half of the visual fields of both eyes. The responsible lesion must be located at the level of the chiasm or retrochiasmatic optic pathways.
- Reference is made to right or left homonymous hemianopsia, depending on whether the right or left halves of both visual fields have been lost.
- Upper or lower homonymous hemianopsia, depending on whether both upper or lower halves of the visual fields have been lost.
- It is called heteronymous hemianopsia when opposite halves of both visual fields are lost. Heteronymous hemianopsias are bitemporal hemianopsia (loss of vision in both temporal halves) or binasal hemianopsia (loss of vision in both nasal halves).
The type of campimetric defect may allow us to locate the lesion responsible at a certain point of the optic pathways.
