Meningitis is an inflammation of the covering of the brain (meninges) and the fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord (cerebrospinal fluid).

Most cases are infectious in origin, including viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Sometimes meningitis depends on autoimmune diseases, infiltration by tumor cells or reactions to drugs or toxic substances.

Initial symptoms include headache, nausea and vomiting.

With disease progression, other neurological symptoms may appear, such as impaired consciousness, seizures, and loss of strength or sensation in the face or extremities.
