MYOCLONUS GENERAL ASPECTS

Myoclonias are rapid, involuntary muscle movements that resemble jerks or twitches. These movements may affect a single muscle or a group of muscles and may occur sporadically or in a series of rapid contractions. Myoclonias can occur in healthy people, like the spasms that sometimes occur when we are falling asleep, but they can also be a symptom of various neurological conditions.

Myoclonias can vary in their intensity and frequency, and although they are often benign, in some cases they may be indicative of a serious underlying disease. Myoclonias can significantly affect the patient’s quality of life, especially if they interfere with daily activities or sleep.

TYPES OF MYOCLONUS

  • Physiological myoclonus: Normal movements that occur in healthy individuals, such as sleep spasms.
  • Epileptic Myoclonus: Associated with different types of epilepsy, these myoclonus are caused by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain.
  • Secondary Myoclonus: The result of brain injury or underlying disease, such as encephalopathies, metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, or infections of the central nervous system.
  • Essential myoclonus: Myoclonic movements that occur without an identifiable cause and are not associated with other neurological diseases.

DIAGNOSIS

The diagnosis of myoclonus is based on a combination of the patient’s medical history, a detailed physical and neurological examination, as well as complementary tests, which may include blood and urine tests to detect metabolic abnormalities or infections, an electroencephalogram (EEG) to evaluate the electrical activity of the brain, or neuroimaging studies to identify structural lesions.

TREATMENT

Treatment of myoclonus depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the symptoms. In some cases, no treatment is required if the myoclonias are benign and do not interfere with the patient’s quality of life.
