Retrobulbar neuritis is the inflammation of the portion of the optic nerve located behind the eye.

The clinical manifestations are loss of vision, altered color vision, altered pupillary reactivity to light and pain on eye movement.

There is no evidence of papillary edema. The possible causes are multiple including infectious, systemic and autoimmune diseases. The most frequent form of the disease is acute demyelinating optic neuritis.
