Sciatica

Sciatica is pain located in the lumbar region that radiates to the buttock and/or different areas of the leg and foot.

The most common cause of this type of pain is nerve root injury secondary to a herniated disc in the lumbosacral spine.

There are other causes such as injuries to the conus medullaris, lumbosacral plexus, osteoarticular and muscular injuries.

The clinical history (form of onset, quality and location of pain, associated symptoms such as loss of strength or sensation in the leg) and physical examination are essential for a correct diagnosis of the cause.
