Whipple’s disease is a chronic infectious condition caused by the bacterium Tropherymawhippleii.

Initial symptoms usually consist of prolonged diarrhea, joint pain and enlarged lymph nodes.

Some patients develop neurological symptoms, including cognitive impairment and motor manifestations (e.g. muscle twitching, incoordination or slowness of movement).

A characteristic symptom of the disease is oculomasticatory myorrhythmia, which consists of simultaneous repetitive movements of the eyes and mouth.
