Personalized music for dementia patients

Music can move us and make us remember. Personalized music plays that rekindle good memories from the past can cheer up people with intellectual impairment. It is possible that music can activate parts of the brain that are not as impaired as the person may appear to be.

An article has been published in Lancet Neurology referring to a lecture given by Andy Lowndes vice-president of the Playlist for Life organization (Glasgow, Scotland).

To create a playlist Andy Lowndes recommends three steps:

  1. Review the best songs from when the person was between 10 and 30 years old. That’s when many important memories are created. Playlist for Life created “100 Years: A Century of Song,” which lists the 100 most popular songs from each year between 1915-2015.(http://bit.ly/2WZ8DMD)
  2. Add songs contributed by family and friends
  3. Add songs related to culture, nationality, and ethnicity.
