Summer is one of the times of the year when Parkinson’s patients should pay more attention to the disease, since due to the high temperatures and increased physical activity many symptoms may worsen and, therefore, their quality of life.

For this reason, the Dr. Marisa AlmarchaThe deputy of the Movement Disorders Unit of the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, provides a series of recommendations for people with Parkinson’s disease, including the need to stay adequately hydrated, since dehydration can aggravate symptoms such as stiffness, dysautonomia or fatigue.

It is also important that during the summer season, people with Parkinson’s disease avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and seek shade and cool environments; and use light and breathable clothing, opting for cotton clothing or clothing made of materials that allow perspiration.

In order to avoid dizziness and prevent falls, Dr. Almarcha stresses the need to get up slowly and wear shoes with good support and non-slip soles. At the same time, and because the heat at night can interfere with sleep and exacerbate the insomnia problems inherent to Parkinson’s, it is advisable for patients to go to bed and get up at the same time every day and to limit caffeine and stimulating activities before going to bed.

Heat can also affect mood and cognitive functions, making symptoms such as anxiety, depression and memory problems more prominent. In this regard, it is recommended that those affected engage in relaxing activities such as listening to music, taking walks outdoors during the cooler hours of the day, and maintaining social contact with friends and family.

To improve constipation, the assistant doctor of the Movement Disorders Unit advocates the consumption of a diet rich in fiber, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes; adequate hydration to facilitate intestinal transit; and moderate physical exercise.

In terms of monitoring the disease and medication consumption during the summer, Parkinson’s patients should always carry an updated list of all the drugs they are taking; strictly follow medical instructions regarding dosage and medication schedules; and follow up regularly with the physician in order to adjust the medication if necessary.

“All these recommendations can help Parkinson’s patients enjoy the summer in a safe and comfortable way, thus improving their quality of life,” says the doctor.
