Several experimental treatments are currently available to treat COVID-19.

The behavior of these drugs can cause various side effects, and interaction with other treatments for some neurological disorders, such as Pakinson’s disease (PD) and other movement disorders, must also be considered.

There are currently no data to suggest that any movement disorder, Parkinson’s disease, tremor, chorea or dystonia, increases the risk of developing COVID-19. However, it should be noted that patients with movement disorders may have other risk factors, such as advanced age, hypertension, diabetes or obesity, which may increase the risk of developing severe coronavirus infections.

The Dr. Monica KurtisThe Director of our Movement Disorders Program, at the request of the International Parkinson Society, has conducted a webinar reviewing possible drug interactions between experimental drugs for COVID-19 and treatments used for Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia, chorea and tics. The goal is to provide therapeutic guidance for adjusting medication and ensuring proper care of these patients if they have coronavirus infection.
