In the Neurology Service of the Ruber Internacional Hospital, we have developed for decades, a circuit of work with patients that allows a therapeutic approach in complex pathologies.
In these years of experience we have been able to identify patients
- with chronic migraines,
- attention deficit disorder,
- functional disorders,
- depression,
- anxiety,
- and other clinical pictures
in which , relatively often, a Highly Sensitive Person functioning underlies.
How did this program for patients with High Sensitivity and/or High Ability come about?
Coinciding with the pandemic and in collaboration with the professionals of the Mental Health field of the BfineBmind Clinic, a program was proposed to identify this trait and group and/or individual training for a better emotional regulation.
This training is supported by the scientific evidence reported on the benefit of mindfulness and compassion-focused therapy.
Reviewing the literature and, from the experience accumulated in this time, we see the need for a good professional evaluation of High Sensitivity to identify whether or not it is accompanied by High Intellectual Ability, as well as to make the differential diagnosis with Attention Deficit Disorder, and other related physical and psychological pathologies.
A more extensive evaluation allows individualizing a proposal for improvement in emotional and therapeutic management if necessary for people with this trait. Experience supports an improvement in prognosis with these interventions.
Aware of the importance of identifying the trait in childhood, the need to improve adaptation in the educational environment and prevent health problems, we have a multiprofessional team with neuropediatrician, neuropsychologist, psychiatrist and child psychologist.
This training is supported by the scientific evidence reported on the benefit of mindfulness and compassion-focused therapy.
People who have participated in this proposal have reported an improvement in their health and have acquired emotional management tools that have also improved professional aspects and social interactions. (Reported in the book “Vulnerability and Strength. Highly Sensitive People. Ed. Bfinebmind, 2023. ).
Pioneer program in Spain
Being able to offer these patients a multiprofessional program in which both the evaluation and emotional management is coordinated between psychiatrist and neuropsychologist, in the case of adults, and between neuro-pediatrician and neuropsychologist specialized in children and adolescents, is a pioneering opportunity in Spain.
